Hi. I'm Sara. I'm your copy person.
REMAX didn’t become the No. 1 brand name in real estate worldwide by winging it. It had systems. Standards. An in-house creative team. And on that team, a specialized group of copy people responsible for something every big brand should be fiercely protective of: how it sounds. Why am I talking about REMAX? Because I led the copy team within Creative Services. I built the team from scratch. Hired it. Onboarded it. Developed it. I created the internal copy style guide from a blank page and built tone documents that translated C-suite personalities into usable direction for marketing teams. I directed copy across channels, campaigns, audiences, and departments. Reviewed the work. Protected the standards. Took in feedback. Adjusted. Kept everyone moving toward the same recognizable voice. For nearly nine years, I lived in that creative house. Then REMAX was acquired. And while acquisitions are complicated, one thing about that one has always struck me: There was enormous value in the brand. The name. The recognition. The balloon. What people already knew, felt, and associated with it. Brand has real value. And voice is part of how you build and protect it. REMAX wasn’t my first big brand where I created and maintained standards. And it won’t be my last. For more than 20 years, I’ve been helping brands of all sizes figure out what to say, how to say it, and increasingly, how to make sure everyone with a hand in marketing stays on brand. That’s brand voice. And it’s become the work I’m best at. I’m a veteran copywriter by craft and a brand voice leader by experience. I’ve worked in-house, agency-side, and independently across real estate, mortgage, sports, travel, tourism, luxury, commercial, retail, lifestyle, medical, product, and yes, glass. (Architectural glass. Automotive glass. Windows and doors glass. I’ve written about a lot of things.) And I’m more than a “storyteller.” (The internet appears to have that position fully staffed.) You deserve more than a story anyway. You’ve got a bottom line. You want results. I understand that. You want copy that does a job. A headline should earn attention. A campaign should ladder up to an objective. A CTA should give people a reason to act. And a brand voice should be distinct enough that if you covered the logo, people could still have a pretty good idea who’s talking. That’s the standard. Well, my standard. Not everyone’s is the same. My sweet spot is somewhere between big-picture brand strategy and one very specific word that is bothering me. I build and protect brand voices. Develop guides, systems, and best practices. Lead writers. Direct content. Pressure-test concepts. Partner with marketing, design, leadership, and legal. Build processes that help creative teams work smarter and faster. And when the work isn’t there yet, I can usually tell you exactly why. Too safe. Too clever. Too generic. Off strategy. Off brand. Trying too hard. Saying what everyone else is saying. Or sometimes, one word away. I’ve spent my career learning the difference. And yes, I use generative AI. I’ve also trained AI systems on brand voice. Because AI is a valuable tool. It isn’t the decision-maker. It helps writers explore, challenge, pressure-test, accelerate, and sometimes get somewhere we wouldn’t have gone on our own. Then I bring 20+ years of judgment to what comes back. Is it good? Is it true? Is it original enough? Is it on strategy? Does it sound like the brand? Would the audience actually care? Can we substantiate it? Would I put my name on it? AI can generate. Judgment still has to come from somewhere. My work is strategic, clean, smart, and built around what your business actually needs the copy to do. I can move from a global campaign to a six-word headline, from executive messaging to social, from highly regulated copy to something with a little swagger without losing the brand along the way. That’s judgment. AI can generate more words than any brand knows what to do with now. Words aren’t the problem. Knowing which ones are worth putting your name on is. That’s where I come in. Need a copy leader? You found one.
